If there’s one thing we believe in as an agency—one constant—it’s change. Assessment. Adjustment. Reinvention. Evolution. We’re constantly guiding our clients through these waters. But today, we wade through them ourselves.

Picasso once said, “Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.”

For the past seven days, you may have noticed our social channels and website went “dark.” Meanwhile, behind the scenes, we were destroying things—breaking them down, deleting, re-evaluating. Making changes, making plans. Shearing off the wool to start fresh. You see, not only do we believe in change at Black Sheep, we believe in dramatic change. Brave, bold, unapologetic change. Know-who-you-are and stand-up-for-what-you-believe-in and own-what-makes-you-tick change. Push harder and don’t-just-be-good-be-better change.

In the past six years, our agency has grown. We’ve learned more about who we are, what we’re good at and what makes us feel fulfilled at the end of the day. In the beginning, our company was about standing out. Now, we focus on standing UP, too. We’re loudly speaking up and advocating for what we care about—civic engagement, education, sustainability, equal rights, immigration, the future of our youth, homelessness, quality of life, access to technology and so many other things that make us want to get out a bullhorn and rally the community.

Last week, I was in a meeting where a colleague described the work we do in this succinct and powerful way: “We connect people with purpose.” That’s it. That’s our aim. To connect people—within companies, within cities, within communities, within cultures—with purpose. In our first year, inspired by our work with Neighborhood Centers, the team at Black Sheep decided that we wanted to do impact-driven work 100% of the time, working only for clients who balanced purpose with profit and cared about leaving the world (or at least their part of it) better than they found it. And in year five, company growth and stability allowed us to make that leap.

Serving exclusively nonprofits, civic organizations and for-profit companies with a social impact mission, we sprint into our sixth year inspired, energized and determined to connect with others who share these goals to do work that matters. To amplify. To accelerate. To do what it takes to provide paths to participation so that we can all work together to solve the world’s problems and create a future we can believe in.

Picasso was right. Sometimes you just have to blow everything up to make space for creation. So, today, we destroy the old and begin a new chapter.
