How We Do Our Best Work
The Black Sheep Community Agreement
Being brave together with T.R.U.S.T.
Strong relationships are the cornerstone of impactful work. At Black Sheep, we embrace hard conversations and bold actions because our impact depends on it. To be brave in our work, we must first be brave with each other.
When we work together, we commit to being on the same team with clear ground rules to guide us. These rules help us stay centered in tough moments and provide a solid reference in challenging conversations.
This is where a Community Agreement comes in—our rules that define how we show up for each other and activate our communities by thoughtfully shaping our group dynamic.
We want to empower everyone (no matter their background or job title) to raise concerns, hold each other accountable and discuss issues in real-time. Most importantly, it fosters openness, kindness and inclusion, leading to clearer, more impactful work.
Our Community Agreement: TRUST

T: Together in Learning
We believe that anti-racism, gender inclusivity, and human rights are the greatest priorities of our time. We hold ourselves accountable to actively learning about and embracing the unique value that each person brings to our community. We treat feedback as a gift.
R: Respect That We’re All Human
We exist to embody and serve diverse communities and honor each other’s lived experiences. We acknowledge our strengths and limitations as people and encourage work-life balance. We commit to conversations where we take responsibility and do what we can to make things right.
U: Use Language Intentionally
We address each other according to one’s preferences and gender identity because words matter. We do not use language that excludes, dismisses, or shuts down people and conversations. We communicate openly, inclusively, and consistently.
S: Seek Clarity Over Comfort
We choose to be direct and brave in difficult conversations, prioritizing kindness and impact over short-term discomfort. We ask hard questions and welcome them in return, in pursuit of equity, accuracy, and creativity.
T: Take Space and Make Space
We are each responsible for including every voice in the conversation, regardless of background, tenure, or identity. We ask for what we need, knowing curiosity is rewarded and respected.
Practical applications of a Community Agreement
Our Community Agreement is tailored to our work and the conversations we want to have with our partners. Here are some specific ways it helps us:
- Agreed-Upon Ground Rules: “We want you to feel safe to be as open and honest as you can. We’re learning new things together, so let’s talk it out.”
- Language for Hard Conversations: “I apologize. I see now that I shut down the conversation, and that’s not good for building trust. I’ll be more mindful of that and appreciate you telling me how that made you feel.”
- Encouraging Questions, Not Assumptions: “I feel this way personally, but is there anything I’m not seeing that might change my mind?”
- Creating Space for New Voices: “I think we should include your newest team member in this conversation. She has an important understanding of how our audience will interpret this.”
Should your organization create a Community Agreement?
We sure think so! Implementing a Community Agreement can help establish clear expectations, foster mutual respect and enhance collaboration within your team and with your partners. It provides a structured approach that builds on your Vision, Mission and Values to navigate challenges, ensuring everyone feels heard and valued.
At Black Sheep, we commit to being on the same team and thoughtful collaborators from the very first moment of partnership. By embracing these principles, we aim to create a respectful, inclusive and impactful working environment for all. Join us in this journey of being brave together.
