Playlists with Purpose: Houston Music Foundation
Because purpose is something none of us can live without.
Let’s be clear. This isn’t exactly an upbeat, easy-going kind of time. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t be intentional about taking action. At Black Sheep, music is our unspoken, feel-good, keep-going-even-when-you’re-exhausted thing that keeps us working hard to activate communities. We kinda miss it. A lot.
To keep our workplace tradition while also taking action, we’re doing something different.
COVID-19 has impacted hundreds (and likely thousands) of local musicians to the point of financial distress—many struggle to afford basic necessities and pay their bills. In early April 2020, Houston Music Foundation launched their crisis relief fund through Artists 4 Artists to get donations into the hands of local singer-songwriters, rappers, DJs, rock musicians, indie musicians, educators, opera singers, instrumentalists and symphonists (YOU NAME IT!) residing in Harris County. Within four days of launch, 600 applicants applied for HMF’s one-time grant of $500.
SIX. HUNDRED. IN. FOUR. DAYS.
Houston Music Foundation is proving that when we rally as a community—shit gets done. We love that attitude.
So we’re starting a new series—Playlists with Purpose. These soul-healing tunes are more than just your typical calm-during-the-pandemic-themed round-up—they’re journeys alongside real people with real stories. They’re a curation of genuine conversations and searching songs—making one hell of an inspiring playlist.
We’re giving what we can to this organization and are grateful to these 3 musicians (and grant recipients) for letting us into their world and sharing a playlist with a purpose with us.

“Rally Time. That's our slogan, because it brings a sense of collective strength and knowing that together, victory is possible. All songs on our playlist have some tie to Houston.” - Rachel and Mark Austin, Founders of Houston Music Foundation
