#52Causes: Thrive At Week 35

According to a 2016 report by Nonprofit HR, nonprofits of all sizes are expected to GROW—in people, purpose and impact this year, to help combat the rising demand in Houston for their services. Over half of nonprofits nationwide plan on creating new positions to help support the thousands of driven employees already working to make Houston a better place by dedicating their time and careers to the communities and people in this city.

Here at Black Sheep, we make it a point to virtually high-five those people and their dedication to give back and serve Houstonians. Every week, we highlight a cause in Houston to showcase their mission, their impact and all of the different ways that you can get involved. It’s called #52Causes—you may have heard about it—and it’s one of our favorite things to do, every week of the year. (See also: Champagne Friday.)

The organizations highlighted below are just FOUR of the 28+ causes we’ve covered so far this year for #52Causes. In case you haven’t seen our posts as you’re skimming the Twittersphere, we’re wrapping these tremendous causes in a bow for you on a monthly basis. Unwrap and enjoy.

Project Row
The mission of Project Row Houses is to be THE catalyst for transforming community through the celebration of art and African-American history and culture. Project Row Houses is a community-based arts and culture non-profit organization in Houston’s northern Third Ward.  It was founded in 1993 as a result of the vision of local African-American artists wanting a positive creative presence in their own community and works to shift the view of art from traditional studio practice to a more conceptual base of transforming the social environment. Currently, they’ve got positions available for full-time and intern prospectors. Warning: serving our communities requires the best you’ve got.

Houston Coalition for the Homeless
The Houston Coalition for the Homeless is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide leadership in the development, advocacy and coordination of community strategies to prevent and end homelessness. They’ve seen the problem of homelessness in the city of Houston and have jumped right in to try and remedy it, by serving those who serve the homeless through research, project management, system capacity building and public policy. There are different ways to advocate with the Coalition—if you’d like to take action and get involved, you can donate, learn more about advocating or find opportunities to volunteer here.

Workshop Houston
Working to lay groundwork for a just society by creating a community that provides youth with what they need to succeed, Workshop Houston offers youth development programs that challenge and inspire students to be bigger and bolder than they previously thought possible. Workshop Houston’s mission is to provide creative, technical and educational resources for students. When Workshop Houston helps students find resources and support, expanded opportunities and define alternative definitions of success for them, their potential is really limitless. Workshop Houston welcomes groups and individuals who are searching for ways to give back. Go here to get involved and see what kind of impact YOU can make working with them.

New Hope Housing
New Hope Housing’s core purpose is to provide affordable, permanent housing with support services for people with limited income. They’ve really tried to embed themselves into the city of Houston, building homes (and lives) with almost a thousand units of beautiful, safe SRO housing. With a range of services, New Hope Housing helps people create stable lives filled with hope. Our hope is that they never stop doing what they’re doing. Our other hope is that people like you are inspired to go here, and help New Hope do what they’re doing.

CONCLUSION:
These organizations and people are working to make HUGE impact in Houston and they fight every day to make sure that their people and resources are doing work that’s making a difference in a Houstonian’s life. Their passion fuels us and our city, and our world is much better for their presence within it.
