A PR Lesson From Fred Armisen: The Power of Personable

Oh Fred Armisen, star of Portlandia and SNL, a clever comedian and the keeper of the key to our wooly hearts. As you may have guessed, there’s a story here.

Fred Armisen wearing a Black Sheep sticker

We first met Fred during an intimate interview in the Samsung Blogger Room at SXSW. We were excited to see one of our heroes, but no one was quite as anxious as Taylor, the flock’s digital strategist and undoubtedly most devoted Fred fan.

Our hearts quickened as Fred entered the room and took a seat at the tiny raised stage. A starstruck Taylor stood at the front and snapped a few photos. “Hi Taylor.” FREAKING FRED ARMISEN SPOKE, resourcefully reading Taylor’s name badge. “How are you?”

Taylor balked. “Oh my gosh, I’m gonna die.” Fred laughed, greeted the interviewer and began his interview, providing insightful quips and hilarious asides.

After the interview, Fred decided to take some questions from the audience. “Taylor,” Fred began. Taylor’s heart started beating so loudly the whole room could hear it. (OK, not really. Just go with it.) “What you did before was really funny.”

FRED THINKS TAYLOR IS FUNNY. (To be fair, she IS really funny.)

“Where are you from?...Oh, Houston? I like Houston.”

FRED LIKES HOUSTON.

“Is there anything you wanted to ask, Taylor?”

FRED STILL KNOWS TAYLOR’S NAME.

This time, Taylor didn’t hesitate. “I just wanted to tell you that you’re my everything.”

Fred smiled. “Thanks. You’re my everything too.”

FRED JUST TOLD TAYLOR THAT SHE IS HIS EVERYTHING. (Sorry, Carrie Brownstein.)

Then Taylor gave him one of our classic “Put a Sheep on It” stickers inspired by the Portlandia sketch “Put a Bird on It” and FRED WORE IT FOR THE REST OF THE INTERVIEW.

Meeting Fred was certainly one of the most memorable parts of our SXSW trip, but it wasn’t just about hanging out with a celebrity. We came to SXSW to learn, and Fred — brilliant, brilliant Fred — certainly taught us a thing or two.

Your fans are your everything.
Over and over again, Fred went out of his way to make his fans feel like they were number one. He took time to pose for pictures with every single person in the room, and never acted like he was too busy or important. While it could come off as creepy to hear from a stranger that you’re they’re everything, Fred just rolled with it and reciprocated. Because, really, shouldn’t your fans be your everything?

Treat them the way you would like to be treated.
As public relations and marketing professionals, we should treat our audiences or customers the same way Fred treats his. Not only will it strengthen brand awareness, but it will foster relationships with limitless potential that can be mutually beneficial to both the brand and the consumer.

Create kindness whenever possible.
As Fred demonstrated, showing others that they matter can be a lot of fun. Creating kindness is about the closest we can come to creating real magic in this world. As public relations and marketing professionals, we can set the tone to create a friendlier, kinder, more personable world.

So the next time you reach out to your audience just remember these simple tips from Fred. Be kind, be friendly, be personable. And if that doesn’t work, you can always just put a sheep on it.
