Black and Tired.

We've got some work to do.

Hey. I’m Torey. Nice to meet you. I work here at Black Sheep, and maybe you’ve seen me around…or maybe you haven’t. And if you haven’t, well—I’m sorry we have to meet this way. But there are some things I’ve been feeling: Exhausted. Frustrated. Angry. Sad. A bit helpless. Because when I see people who look like me being murdered by those who serve and protect…that shit makes me feel some type of way.

So I’m here to speak my truth because I can—because I’m fortunate enough to work at a place where I can scream out loud and speak my mind when something demands that type of response. Now is one of those times. This is life through the black lens. This is being black in white America. This is the black experience.

To Eric Garner

To Philando Castile

To Michael Brown

To Tamir Rice

To Sandra Bland

To Breonna Taylor

To Ahmaud Arbery

To George Floyd

This is for the black men who are silenced

This is for the black men who never got a chance to defend themselves

Who were robbed of their lives and their futures and stolen from their families

This is for the gentle giants

The 6-foot-4, intimidating black man

The threatening black man who never hurt anybody

The black man with dreadlocks seen from the rearview mirror

This is for the unarmed 17-year-old black boy

Because Brock got 3 months, but Trayvon got killed

The cops who act quickly

Inducing fear

Violence

Afraid for their lives and so quick to take one

To the white men who are guilty

To the white men with trigger fingers

Kneeling on a black man’s neck but

The audacity for us to take a knee

How much ignorance does it take to end one black life?

One…two…three…

Four.

Quickly…

You must act quickly.

Power.

Control.

Fear.

He can’t breathe.

Quickly!

We are far from reparations.

Say their names.
