Crisis Fundraising

Whether in isolation or when we get back to the outside world, we’re adapting—every week. Every day. Every hour. We’re learning new ways to figure it out. So we’ve started this series for you (and for us) to keep track of the things we’re learning, day-by-day. Week-by-week. We’ll be sharing key takeaways with you—from crisis fundraising to new digital features to thought leadership. We’ll navigate. We’ll maneuver. And we’ll learn together.

Crisis Fundraising

Nonprofits are facing one of the most challenging fundraising landscapes right now, so we’re gobbling up all of the information we can on how to revive lagging fundraising.

After attending various crisis fundraising webinars, some learnings:

There are 3 Phases of Crisis Fundraising

Phase 1: The Bump - surge in fundraising than rapid drop

Phase 2: The Slump - lower-than-normal giving

Phase 3: The Surge - recovery of giving/erasing shortfall - typically led by major donors

Quick tips:

- Don’t go silent right now with your donors.
- Work on existing donor relationships first and then cultivate new ones after you’ve exhausted all other options.
Foundations are a good first stop.

- Be honest and direct as to where the money is going to.

- Do say your services/clients are impacted or possibly cut off.

- We’re personally recommending clients embrace vulnerability and transparency.

What about events?

This is a question we’re hearing a lot with most fundraising events being cancelled, postponed or going virtual. Some of our thoughts:

- What were you trying to accomplish with your event? Maybe this is the wake-up you needed to shift away from that country club breakfast, hotel ballroom luncheon/gala. How can you be disruptive in this environment?

- EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT. TEST, LEARN, APPLY. This is a new frontier.

- VR experiences, AR tools that bring event elements into the audience’s home, ongoing interactive initiatives that replace the single event…like we mentioned above, experiment!

We want to hear from you! What fundraising obstacles are you encountering? How are you bucking the norm right now? Email us at info@theblacksheepagency.com or send us a DM
