Putting Purpose in the Driver’s Seat with Ferrari

The 1981 Ferrari 512i BB has a horizontally mounted direct-injected V12 engine that produces 335hp, 333lb/ft of torque and has a claimed top speed of 179mph.

Only 1,007 units were produced worldwide before the automotive giant moved on to its next icon, the Testarossa. The 512i was also the first mid-engine Ferrari and lead to Enzo Ferrari’s creation of both the V6 and V8 Dinos, two other landmarks in their long history.

All those numbers listed above probably nothing to you—but here’s the thing: All of that specificity matters to someone. You may not care that the reason Ferrari chose to put their engine in the middle of the car was because they were being beaten in Le Mans by other mid-engine cars, or that the 512i was meant to rival the looks of the Lamborghini Miura and Countach. The story behind the 512i is endless and the time and effort put into it is immeasurable. And that effort matters to people like architect Holger Schubert, who explains how this car inspired his creative space as well as his infatuation with driving it in the video below.

Compare that almost any message or work that our clients do. They are niche, specific and important to those who put their lives into their work. Our work here uses stories like these to show the world the importance of having purpose. Although your neighbor may not have the same motivations and experiences that drive them to do what they do, their purpose is of no less significance.

With this in mind, it’s also important to remember to have compassion towards others’ devotions. This leads not only to a better understanding of our neighbors and friends but also to a better understanding of ourselves and how authentic we can be to each other.
