Valentine's Day For Rebels

Scott Pilgrim took on the world. Han Solo? Encased in Carbonite. That one dude from the Proclaimers even walked 500 miles for love.

Don’t even get us started on Romeo and Juliet. We would do anything for love, but we won’t do that. (No, no don’t do that.)

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, there are so many crazy-making options for what to do for those you care about. Couple that with the realization that your love is a unique, special, one-of-a-kind creature? Full on panic mode.

To save your ass (you’re welcome!) we’ve come up with some ideas to really blow it out this year.

Aimee’s Pick
Barrel + Ink

Yes, we know wine is usually a given on V-Day, but how about custom-designed delicious handcrafted wine paired with custom-designed delicious handcrafted chocolates? Um, hmm, yeah. Who’s saying “that’s typical!” now?

If you want to go this route, you need to get on the ballthey are only accepting orders through February 3rd (TODAY PEOPLE) for Valentine’s Delivery!

Sarah’s Pick
Punk Rock Mixtape

Always a proponent of the DIY route, the rebel’s greatest weakness is music. Sappy love music? Not hardcore enough. You need to make a mixtape of the greatest punk love anthems, including “Marriage” by The Descendents, which is a sweet anthem about love and commitment. Pairs nicely with a dozen Roses. (More glam rock, but still counts.)

Brittany’s Pick
Heart Hike

What’s not to love about the great outdoors? Grab your sweetie, your boots and your trusty map and hit the trails looking for love—hearts that is. Natural hearts. It’s like a super-sweet scavenger hunt. Find the perfect spot through Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Jo’s Pick
Art for Your Amore

There is no more enduring gift than art. Grabbing a print or, better yet, an original piece for your original piece is beyond romantic—it’s classy as hell. Bonus points for art tied into a favorite travel destination or special location.

Get Cooking

Like a unicorn, a spot in one of Pondicheri’s coveted cooking classes is downright mythical. If you manage to snag one it’s akin to creating a Legend of Zelda level quest for your true love. If your heart is pure and your Google-fu strong you can make this solemn vow as your gift this year: I will get us into one of those damn classes by year’s end. But until then, you can always dine in.

Laila’s Pick
Treat YO SELF

Emphasis on the YO SELF part of the equation. Isn’t Valentine’s Day the perfect excuse for a little self care? Grab something that makes you feel taken care of, whether that be bubbles, bubble bath, beluga caviar or Beats by Dre.

Kelsey’s Pick
Galentine’s Day

A pivot on the idea that you’re only celebrating romance on Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day (Feb. 13)  was invented by patron saint of awesome women, Leslie Knope (A.K.A. Amy Poehler, who is the high priestess of amazing women) as an effort to cast a light on the wonder of female friendships. So, grab a bottle or two of bubbles, make some plans for a hangout and celebrate those wonderful friends who make life fun.

Get Creative

Romantic dinner, cocktails and dancing? That ain’t gonna cut it. When you’re trying to show your loved one how much you, well, love them, you have to pull out all the stops. Or, rather, add in a bunch of stops—an activity, like a coffee crawl, is what we’re suggesting. Make like a 1990s Ethan Hawk film and plan a few stops at must-visit coffee shops around town for a really low-key (and low-cost) way to celebrate.

Roslynn’s Pick
S’Mores

Oh, and a place to cook them. As in camping. Outside. In nature. Way better than a crowded restaurant.

Love Through Service

Why not share your love with others? Nope. Not in the weird way you’re thinking. (Mind out of the gutter, y'all.) Through service to others. The Holiday Project organizes people to visit those living in nursing homes and hospitals, giving them a connection to others in the community and giving you an opportunity to spread the love. Their next meet up? February 13th in Cypress.

No matter what you decide to do this Valentine’s Day, just remember: As long as you care and put in some effort, you’ll do just fine. Tell us what you landed on in the comments.
