Copywriter Job Description

Black Sheep is always continuing our quest to tell better stories. Whether we’re concepting a new campaign, shaping or evolving a brand, writing a client manifesto or working on a simple brochure, as our Copywriter, you will work with words to elicit an emotional response that leads to action. You’ll be part of a team of enthusiastic problem solvers, inventing and delivering new brand experiences for our clients. In this position you will leverage your love of writing and strong conceptual background to deliver crisp and eloquent ideas, challenging the team to do the same. You’ll confidently manage multiple projects on several campaigns at once while remaining flexible, positive and detail oriented through revisions.

What does that mean for your day-to-day? You will be…

  • Approaching writing by first looking at/understanding research to give depth and credibility to ideas and bring them to life; participating in research and discovery whenever necessary/powerful
  • Brainstorming and generating creative concepts and content as part of the creative team
  • Concepting and writing original copy across a range of media (digital, print) and formats (advertising, marketing collateral, tool kits, guides, strategic documents)
  • Writing and editing creative campaign copy
  • Writing to articulate ideas and inspiration in support of client brand strategies
  • Defining and implementing a brand voice/personality that is tailored specifically for each client
  • Developing messaging standards and tool sets for clients and following them to provide additional coaching and/or assets throughout the life of the account
  • Maintaining a consistent level of cultural and commercial awareness, keeping tabs on issues that should be factored into our client’s work
  • Supporting the operations team by writing inspiring narratives for pitch decks and proposals
  • Supporting the CEO with ghostwriting, talking point development for interviews, speaking engagement scripts and presentations and other thought leadership initiatives
  • Presenting creative work to clients when writing is the primary asset up for review

Why is this role important for Black Sheep’s work?

The Copywriter makes the biggest impact when solving complex challenges by helping to bring information and ideas to life through the written word. An idea is just an idea until it’s communicated and given the green light. From writing “we get you” new client pitches to campaign rationales to actual campaign copy, you will influence our work at every stage.

Job Requirements

While it’s hard to define the exact experience necessary, we are hoping to find someone that meets the requirements below—or someone who can prove to us that the experiences they’ve had beat what we have outlined.

  • 5+ years relevant experience in which you have written for brand initiatives, met aggressive deadlines and driven projects, preferably at an agency or in another fast-paced environment
  • Strong, concise, creative writing skills
  • Strong attention to details like spelling, grammar, punctuation and style
  • Ability to proof and edit copy for accuracy
  • Advanced communication skills, including both written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Confidence and poise to successful present creative to clients
  • Ability to handle managing 8-10 projects simultaneously, while maintaining your cool

Key Areas of Mastery

  • Writing: Understand the head and the heart of what motivates diverse audiences to take action and have the desire to dig deep and make that story come to life. Your primary methods of communication will emphasize written and verbal, but you have an eye for how to pair messaging with the visual for maximum effect.
  • Creative: Help shape, define and sell smart, sustainable ideas that are rooted in research and connect the dots between client work and current culture. In our work, often half the battle is explaining and selling a creative concept, which typically begins with illustrative writing. It’s your job to help convince clients to be bold.
  • New Business Support: Our operations team is strong when it comes to figuring out proposal logistics, but we really win new business when a prospect falls in love with our writing and can see that we “get” them. You will support the new business team by inspiring our clients from the moment they first encounter our work.
  • CEO Support: Be proactive and responsive when it comes to writing opportunities for thought leadership and visibility. Find new ways to repurpose the created content across multiple channels so that the CEO’s business ideas, industry expertise and unique perspectives can translate into a constant stream of content. Authentically translate CEO’s voice while also rooting concepts in data and research where appropriate.
