Social Media and Content Manager Job Description

From TikTok to #longreads, you see narrative threads as they emerge and know how to bring cause-based brands into those stories. You also know how to establish and grow a captive audience around a brand. You think fast, create even faster and can strategically move from ideation to execution to produce captivating content that leads to engagement and action.

To do that, you must master these four areas:

  • Extreme originality. You are a writer at heart-who knows how to tell stories and elevate them to a greater vibrancy on social channels for our clients. You can look at brand guidelines and keenly adopt and adapt voices accordingly.
  • Multilayered management. You're back and forth between Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc., and chiming in for our clients and agency. You naturally find ways to engage (and know when to not-we're not in the business of feeding trolls) and bring conservation into the fold through blogs and additional content.
  • Evidenced activation. Good creative speaks for itself-but it only tells part of the story. You cement success by pulling our creative into the digital world in a way that drives powerful metrics. You push our clients and agency channels to maintain a healthy, data-driven content mix.
  • Experimental creativity. Content extends beyond the written word you think strategically in medium and channel recommendations. Should this be a video? An infographic? A campaign or a cinemograph? What decisions will tell the best story and drive the most significant impact?

What does that mean for your day to day? You will be…

  • Collaborating with the creative team and your digital colleagues to develop brand and campaign ideas
  • Writing for digital environments and campaigns
  • Crafting digital content strategies
  • Advising on and/or managing client social channels
  • Maintaining editorial calendars and communicating content initiatives to clients and stakeholders.
  • Follower building across channels.
  • Contributing to the Black Sheep social media presence.
  • Tracking performance and testing creative for social media ad buys.
  • Researching new and emergent platforms and content mediums to enhance the digital capabilities of the agency.

Why is this role important for Black Sheep’s work?

As a Social Media and Content Manager, you thrive on telling stories and building connection. You see social media as a way to do that creatively and effectively, knowing that each platform has its own nuance and fluency. You help explain the mission of our clients and agency through content. You give our audiences a chance to interact with our agency and clients on a more personal level through day-to-day interactions and relationship building.

Job Requirements

While it’s hard to define the exact experience necessary, we are hoping to find someone that meets the requirements below—or someone who can prove to us that the experiences they’ve had beat what we have outlined.

  • 3-5 years relevant experience in which you have concepted, developed, planned and managed social media and digital content for brands and organizations, preferably at an agency or in another fast-paced environment
  • Strong, concise, creative writing skills
  • Proven creative thinking and ideation
  • Knowledge of paid versus organic social media strategy and many different social media platforms
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details like spelling, grammar, punctuation and style
  • Advanced communication skills, including both written (documents and presentations) and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to handle managing 6-10 projects simultaneously, while maintaining your cool

Key Areas of Mastery

  • Identifying emerging trends and demonstrating proficiencies in digital channels. You are hungry for what’s next—which means keeping an eye out for the platforms, updates and technology that will deliver a stronger digital experience for our agency and clients. You demonstrate strong analytics experience with proficiency in excel, Google Analytics and experience in Google Data Studio, Facebook and Google Marketing Platform (SA360, DV360, etc.)
  • Maintaining and employing measurement and analytics. You track metrics and manage digital reports for our agency and our clients so we can always have a test, learn and apply mentality in real time. Beyond translating this information into useful insights that drive new strategy, you know how to translate complex information to clients to prove results, drive decisions and create success.
  • Embracing holistic digital strategy. You are the captain of effectiveness in all digital areas and have a rich understanding of the entire digital landscape from email to web, paid to social and  you can speak to in-the-moment statistics, trends, behaviors and platforms.
  • Understanding digital at scale. Our clients come with big goals that require big solutions—and we must create recommendations that accommodate their existing tools and framework, as well as provide recommendations about where we can grow and evolve.
Open-Book Management and Bonus Compensation

From the inception of Black Sheep, we've made a conscious effort to always keep people as the central focus of our growth strategy. As a team we practice open-book management and huddle weekly to discuss our financial trajectory. We pay out quarterly bonuses to the team based on specified quarterly agency targets. Team members are currently averaging 12% of their annual salary in bonus annually with potential to increase based on agency performance. We win and lose as a team and our bonus structure is no different.

We don’t believe talent and expertise should look the same—ever. Tell us how you’ll join us in sparking an empowered and brilliant future for our communities. Be your own agent of change. We want to meet you.
