Flower Power

My mom has always been a flower lady.

She’s worked in a few shops, donates her time to a floral nonprofit and still does flower arrangements for her church. Maybe this has instilled an appreciation. I buy them weekly, and weekly my wife believes they are a “gesture”. And they are, but maybe more to the house or our space, and sure my wife. My favorite poet/songwriter has a line from Actual Air that says, “I refuse to be the middleman in a relationship between you and the florist.” While sarcastic, and not what intended I pull the idea from this line that flowers are not gender specific and they don’t have to be for an occasion. I just like having them around.

As we rocket through a Houston Spring and things are in bloom it reminds me of the benefits of flowers and plants in your home or office space. For me personally it’s about the meditative process of caring for them and maintaining their charm. Scientists suggest that creativity and cognitive performance improve with a little help from greens. And while it likely won’t heal insomnia the smell of fresh lavender can be calming and help folks sleep. Scientist have also linked flowers to help boost and unlock memory. Plants in your home and office can also help purify indoor air pollution.

So test these ideas. Start small,  buy a bouquet or a small house plant. Set a weekly reminder to check in and see if your mood, space or creativity improve.
