This is My Fight Song

There have been enough think pieces published to know we exist in an attention economy. Every one and every thing is fighting for our eyeballs and brain power. And it is EXHAUSTING to try to consume and manage all of the content being pulsed out by the media, brands and the digital social connections in one’s universe.

My solution?

Burn it all down (j/k).

As the new Texas Children’s Hospital Chairman for the Junior League, I recently had to give a speech during a volunteer orientation. This particular excerpt, handed down to me from Chairmans’ past, really stood out:

“Finally I leave you with a challenge and an opportunity.  Many days, you will drive here in ridiculous Houston traffic. You may have spent your day making stressful decisions at work or home and your mind may be in a million different places. Decide right now that every time you enter the parking garage that you are going to press pause on everything else in your life except being here for our patients. The children and families we serve are counting on us to be positive and present.”

This sentiment reiterated to me that our attention is better spent on the tangible, the fulfilling, the stuff that gives your life purpose and meaning. Everything else is secondary and probably a waste of time.  So I challenge you to consider letting go of maintaining weak social ties (run, don’t walk, and pick up Cal Newport’s “Digital Minimalism”), press pause on your distractions and fight for a purposeful use of your time.

If you need a little extra motivation, here is a video I *actually* encourage you to watch while you reevaluate how you spend your time –  Texas Children’s “Fight Song.”
